The expansion project is a major initiative in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan, which includes adding a second track along the existing line and upgrading the quality of the current line. The construction period is set for 4 years. The second track will start from Pingliangnan Railway Station on the Baoji-Zhongwei Railway, passing through Pingliang City in Gansu Province, Guyuan City, Wuzhong City and Zhongwei City in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and connect with Zhongwei Railway Station. The total length of the line is about 289 kilometers, with a design speed of 160 km/h. Once the expansion project is completed, Baoji-Zhongwei Railway will become a first-class dual-track electrified railway for both passenger and freight services, with a design speed of 160 km/h. The line will have 15 stations: Pingliangnan Railway Station, Pingliang Railway Station, Xinli Railway Station, Pengyangxi Railway Station, Guyuan Railway Station, Sanying Railway Station, Haiyuandong Railway Station, Liwang Railway Station, Tongxin Railway Station, Tianhu Railway Station, Zhongningnan Railway Station, Xuanhe Railway Station, Huangyangwan Railway Station, Liujiazhang Railway Station and Zhongwei Railway Station. Among these, Pengyangxi Railway Station will be a new station, Zhongwei Railway Station will be an existing station, and the others will be expanded and upgraded stations.

　　The Pingliang-Zhongwei section of the Baoji-Zhongwei Railway is crucial to the regional railway network, as it connects the Pingliang-Qingyang Railway and the Xi'an-Pingliang Railway at Pingliangnan Railway Station. Through a connection line, it also connects with the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway and the Taiyuan-Zhongwei Railway. After the project is completed, it will greatly improve the passenger and freight transport capacity and efficiency of the line, making travel and goods transportation along the route more convenient. This will contribute significantly to the implementation of ecological protection and high-quality development strategies in the Yellow River basin, promote a new development pattern for the western region, and boost the economic and social development of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia old revolutionary base areas.
